The Chieftain Olav Tryggvason
Paula Robles Nettel
On the rocky shores of Obrestad,
the winds of Jæren are soaked
with your mother's lullabies.
Astrid's voice, like her mother's,
embraced the tramper's heart,
the love for their king is shared.
Viking, King Olav,
great-grandson of Fair Hair.
A wife you took in your youth,
and in the early edges of your faith rebirth,
a second woman came your way.
There is no paper, nor signature
there are no witness to that event,
solely the invisible powers of the all might one,
that brought you and her in front of an altar.
Your second one, not jarls, karls nor thalls,
rhymester of a foreign land,
no curtsy from her you ever demand,
leveled were their minds and their hearts
equally respected intellects.
Devoted, distant, forbidden companions
of the silence battles we've conquered.
Viking, King Olav,
from the beginning of imperfect times,
to the eternity of silence left behind,
you remain:
great man among men,
grand king, among kings.
From Stavanger March 29th 2013, Obrestad and Trondheim January and February 2015
Olav Tryggvason
